The error may be because the steering is not correctly installed and its alignment is out, so the car is having trouble in providing adequate traction to wheels on paved surfaces. Your vehicle has a built-in gyro, so when you turn the steering wheel, it knows which wheels are going to get the power.

These vehicles have a recall on the ABS system for faulty wiring. You may want to check with your local dealer to see if your vehicle is included.

SOURCE: abs fault on vw passat
Dear All After taking the car back to our most excellent garage they quickly diagnosed the fault with the ABS. It was to do with the gap between the sensor and the wheel - it has to be a very precise distance and was disturbed by the changing of the CV boot (seems to be a common problem). Half hour later and it is as good as new - this was after lots of electronic testing etc. - the clue was that it didn't give any registered fault on the diagnostic computer. Hope this helps you Saxoste Jon A

SOURCE: 2001 S Type Jaguar ABS and Traction Control fault lights on
Hi First I suggest that you get a diagonostic check on ABS system. and then a visual inspection of the brakes. Warped brake rotors do not make noice, but the steering will start to judder when brakes applied at around speeds from 40 up . Possible cause that the vehile picked up something from road such as nylon/ plastic/stone Mike

The ABS carries out a self-test when the ignition is switched on and if no fault exists the light will go out in less than a minute. If the light stays on it means the system has a fault.
The sort of fault that switches on the light has little to do with the condition of the brakes but has a great deal to do with the sensors, the wiring, the pump and modulator and the ECU. A code read is needed to help with the diagnostic process.
A common fault is the ABS wheel speed sensors that suffer from damaged wires or corrosion of the housing can build and squeeze the sensor until the plastic cracks and allows water ingress.
The earlier variable reluctance type generates a signal as the wheel rotates and can be tested with a multimeter but the later type works on a different principle and testing is beyond the scope of the home mechanic.

Finding the fault code will not clear the problem if you reset the system without finding the cause the light will just come on again or the fault code will not clear.
Anything related to brakes should be checked out by a garage/mechanic and not ignored.
Its probably just an abs sensor failed but its better to be safe than sorry.
Sorry for the lecture but I wouldnt like to see anyone hurt due to brake system failure.

The way the Brakes work on your Colorado, if there is an issue with your ABS, the brakes will still work. You may just not the have ABS brakes active. Most common cause of the ABS indicator is a faulty sensor to one of the 4 wheel. the common ones are the front wheels. Inspect the ABS sensor lead wire which should be along the A-arms to the ABS sensor on the inside wheel hub. Spray brake parts cleaner to the sensor and speed ring to ensure there clean and free of dirt that may be hindering the sensor to read the speed ring on the hub. Look at the condition of the lead wire and inspect for corrosion or any other type of damage. Most of the time a good spray of Brake parts cleaner will fix the problem. If there is an Auto Zone around your area, buy the brake parts cleaner there and have them scan the truck for the DTC codes which would indicate that it is the ABS sensor and not the ABS module, which will be costly and your most likely run it the way it is without ABS due to cost of replacing the module. Good luck friend.
